African American Women Awards

The focus of the AAWA was to identify and honor high profile women who had made significant achievements in their field. It also filled a void as no other organization in South Jersey was honoring African –American women, while several organizations had and are still honoring men. The initiative started in 2004 after a year of planning.

In 2005 when Rosa Parks the mother of the Civil Rights movement died, we added an award named after Rosa Parks for our honorees. This individual should be a trailblazer and or pioneer in her field. Her achievements should be extensive and her character impeccable. Suggested fields of endeavor may include, but not be limited to academia, professional aptitude, commercial success, Civil Rights activism, government, industry, religion, the sciences or philanthropic activities. We would also look for acts of unusual courage, valor and commitment that have a major impact on the community.

Since 2004, proceeds went to the following:

  • One hundred and sixty-two(162) women
  • Eight (8) individuals the Rosa Parks award.
  • Support our Guide Right (mentor program), numerous scholarships and college visits
  • Sponsored community activities

Proceeds from this event will be used to develop an Academic Achievement Center in South Jersey, which would offer mentoring, a computer lab for students to do homework and workshops on topics important to their personal and academic success.

Allocation Statement to Donors

The Kappa Community Development Corporation hereby declares that up to 15% of grants and/or donations will be allocated as functional expenses, which are divided into three categories:

  1. Management- Activities and/or office supplies that are not directly identifiable with a program but are indispensable to the KCDC.
  2. General- May include accounting, general management and oversight, audit, budgeting, financing, communications with the public, legal, insurance and risk management.
  3. Fundraising- publicizing and conducting fundraising campaigns, conducting special events and preparing/distributing fundraising materials.
